Starting® Up® Your® Account® Securely
Welcome aboard! You’ve taken a pivotal step toward securing your digital assets. This page—Trezor.io/Start—is your official onboarding journey where you will learn how to start up your account with confidence, from unboxing to making your first transaction. 🔐
In an era of online threats, a hardware wallet ensures your private keys never leave the device. Each action you take must be confirmed on the device itself. That’s why this process is safe from phishing, malware, and remote tampering. Let’s get going!
To ensure a smooth setup, gather the following items ahead of time:
⚠️ Important: Never enter your recovery seed (the 12/24 words) into any website, app, or digital file. Always keep it offline and secure.
Open your browser and navigate precisely to https://trezor.io/start. Make sure the URL is correct and the padlock icon shows secure. This is where your official setup starts.
On this page, you'll see options to download the Trezor Suite application or to use a web interface, depending on your system. Always follow the instructions shown for your device to avoid any setup mistakes.
Click the download link matching your computer’s operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux). Trezor Suite is the application that manages your wallet, transactions, and firmware updates.
After the download completes, run the installer. Grant permissions if prompted. Once installed, launch Trezor Suite to proceed with setup. If your system requests security confirmations, approve them.
Connect your Trezor via USB to your computer. Trezor Suite should automatically detect your device and prompt the next steps. If it doesn't appear, try another USB port or a different cable. Avoid USB hubs if possible.
The device may run an authenticity check; always confirm directly on the device screen. This verification helps ensure you're using a genuine unit. 👍
Many new devices ship without firmware. The Suite will prompt you to install it. If your firmware is already installed but there's an update, it will ask you to update. Approve the action both in Suite and on your device.
Wait until the firmware process completes fully. Do not disconnect. Once done, the device restarts and performs an internal integrity check to detect tampering or corruption.
Now, you’ll be given two clear choices:
If creating new, your device will show a sequence of words (the recovery seed). Write them down in exact order on the provided card. After recording, the device will ask you to confirm certain words to ensure correctness.
💡 Tip: Use a gas- and fire-resistant safe location for your seed. Multiple copies stored in secure, separate places help protect you from disasters.
Next, you set a PIN that protects your device when connected. Importantly, the PIN is always entered on the Trezor device itself—not on-screen via your computer—so malware cannot capture it.
Choose a PIN you can remember but which isn’t obvious (avoid “1234”, birthdays, etc.). Never write your PIN near your recovery seed.
Once your wallet is active, Trezor Suite will allow you to enable the coin accounts you want (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.). Enable only the ones you use to keep your dashboard clean.
You can also opt in for advanced features such as:
With your Trezor account now active, here are your core operations:
Trezor gives you robust hardware-level security—but your habits matter. Here are critical practices to follow:
🛡️ The strongest security is one you actively maintain. Hardware protection is only part of the defense — your caution matters just as much.
Losing the physical device doesn’t mean losing your funds — as long as your recovery seed is safe:
If the seed and (if applicable) passphrase are correct, your wallet will restore exactly as it was.
Occasionally you may face setup hiccups. Here are common problems and how to resolve them:
